St Catherine’s College proposes to appoint a 5-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Early Modern French with effect from October 2026. The appointment is for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal (subject to successful probation and approval by Governing Body).
The Lecturer will be expected to teach 5 weighted hours averaged over three terms (twenty-four weeks) for the duration of the appointment (the College operates a weighting system whereby hours spent teaching groups larger than one person count for more than one hour). College teaching is in small groups (usually two or three students for literature, and four to seven for language). In addition, as a member of the team of Modern Languages tutors, the post-holder will be expected to play a full role in the running of French in the College, including arranging tuition in French, participating in the admissions process, setting and marking College examinations, helping to organise the Year Abroad, and taking a role in the pastoral care of undergraduates. The Lecturership will be held under the Statutes and By-Laws of the College in force from time to time.
The post-holder will be responsible for teaching a range of papers in French literature and language to undergraduates reading for degrees involving French, and will be responsible for overseeing the academic programmes of those students and for monitoring their progress. Core teaching will include translation into English for all year groups, with one or two hours a week devoted to teaching in Early Modern areas of the first-year Prelims and Final Honours School literature course (second- and fourth-year).
Course details can be found at https://www.mod-langs.ox.ac.uk/french/undergraduate-studies, and the syllabus is available at https://examregs.admin.ox.ac.uk/Regulation?code=hsofmodelang .
There may be the possibility of an additional separate teaching arrangement with the Faculty for which the appointee would be paid at the relevant lecture rate [currently £143.46 per hour inc. holiday pay at 25-26 rates]. This would be subject to negotiation with the Faculty and according to a separate letter of engagement.
Informal enquiries about the tutorial teaching requirements may be made to the current Director of Studies, Dr Jessica Goodman (Jessica.goodman@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)
The annual stipend for the Stipendiary Lecturer appointment is currently £14,088. The Lecturer will be a member of the Senior Common Room and will be entitled, free of charge, to five meals per week (three of which may be lunch) during Term and the Admissions Period, and one lunch and one dinner per week outside Term.
