The role

The post will provide funded time for a GP to pursue their research interests in primary care infection, supported by the Centre for Academic Primary Care Infection Research Group (CAPC-IRG), established in 2001 by Professor Alastair Hay. The CAPC-IRG is a multi-disciplinary group (GPs, epidemiologists, microbiologists, social scientists, statisticians, trialists, health economists) dedicated to improving the use of antibiotics in primary care, where 90% of all infections are managed and 80% of all health service antibiotics are prescribed. The group’s research seeks to inform and improve decision making at each step of the ‘patient pathway’, from infection acquisition to patient-healthcare professional interactions, antibiotic prescribing and antibiotic consumption.

Hybrid working is available; office-based days should include Tuesdays.

What will you be doing?

You will be:

  1. developing proposals to secure research funding;
  2. conducting high-quality primary care research;
  3. publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting research at relevant conferences;
  4. establishing new national and international collaborations;
  5. completing a PhD (if applicable); and
  6. developing leadership skills.

You should apply if

You are a practising GP in the UK and registered with the GMC. You will have excellent knowledge of infection as well as experience of conducting and publishing high-quality research in primary care. You will have contributed to research proposal development and/or delivery of successful funding bids and will be able to manage your own workload and deliver projects on time. You will employ excellent oral and written skills to communicate complex ideas to a range of audiences, and you will have experience of teaching and an enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Additional information

Contract type: Open-ended with funding until 31/05/2027 (start ideally on 01/10/2026)

Work pattern: Part-time/0.8 FTE (to include Tuesdays)

Shift pattern: 28 hours per week
