Cardiff University comprises three Colleges and the School of Healthcare Sciences is part of the College of Biomedical and Life sciences. The College forms an ideal environment for health and biological research with six thematic research strengths covering Cancer; Development & Regenerative Biology; Infection, Inflammation & Immunity; Mechanisms of Living Systems; Mind, Brain & Neuroscience and Population Health. We have a strong collaborative ethos across schools within the College and across the whole University. Key strategic enablers within the College are the Centre for Trial Research, which is a UKCRC Registered CTU which undertakes evaluations across health and social care, CUBRIC which is a world leading scanning brain scanning facility and the Medicines Discovery Institute which develops new medications through to market and has a unique industry mentoring scheme for researchers. We also host external funded centres including the Dementia Research Institute, the Wolfson Centre for Child & Adolescent Mental Health and Welsh Government funded Centres for Women’s Health, Kidney Disease and Primary & Emergency Care.
The School of Healthcare Sciences is based on the Heath campus alongside the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and shares the site with the University Hospital of Wales, bringing together education, research and clinical teams. The School delivers pre-registration programmes for adult, child and mental health Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging and Radiotherapy and Oncology. It has multidisciplinary postgraduate taught and research programmes. Our portfolio of applied health and social care research has direct impact on outcomes, service delivery and innovation across all care settings, with specific strengths are in mental health, cancer and rehabilitation and physical activity. We have a research and teaching space that is equipped with facilities for movement analysis and exercise testing. The School promotes health and wellbeing through world-class education, research and engagement - preparing compassionate innovative professionals who make a difference across the UK and worldwide. The RCN is the professional body for nursing and the voice of nursing across the UK. It aims to promote the art and science of nursing and the profession.
The first year of this role will be funded by the RCN endowment fund. Thereafter the post will be funded through a 60/40 split between Cardiff University and the RCN. Funding is available for the role holder to appoint a nurse PhD studentship (salary replacement).
