Stipend: Spine point 40 to 46 on the University pay scale (£36,636 - £43,482) per annum

The College wishes to appoint an early career researcher and committed teacher to the new Knox-Shaw Fellowship in Mathematics. The post is a College Assistant Professorship and will be tenable from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed period of six years until 31 August 2032. The post-holder will be required to contribute to direction of studies for the Mathematical Tripos, and to provide teaching via small-group supervision for at least six courses in Parts IA (first year) and IB (second year) and, subject to demand, for a course in Part II (third year) of the Mathematical Tripos. Applications are especially welcome from candidates who can teach pure mathematics and mathematical statistics, though those with both applied and pure expertise will also be considered.

The Knox-Shaw Fellow will provide undergraduate supervisions for a total of 160 hours per annum in the first year of appointment, contribute to Direction of Studies in Mathematics, and take part in the undergraduate admission process.

The appointment is a fixed‐term early career development post. The stipend will be on a scale ranging from point 40 to point 46 on the University’s single salary spine (currently £36,636 to £43,482).  Salary progression within this range (by one spine point every other year) is conditional upon engagement with the college’s supportive annual process of Professional Development Review for employed academic Fellows, and satisfactory outcome thereof. The position is pensionable under the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme. In addition to the main salary, a separate stipend for directing studies will also be payable which comprises a fixed element of £670 per annum, and a per capita element of £108 per student. Fellows of the college may hold one or more of a number of “annual offices” (e.g. Dean of Discipline, Tutor, Praelector): College Assistant Professors are under no obligation to put themselves forward for these roles, but are eligible to do so, and doing so would be welcomed.  The annual offices attract an additional stipend.

The Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of the College. The Fellow will enjoy the usual privileges of a Fellowship, and academic and entertainment allowances are available.

The Fellow will be able to choose between

  • - exclusive use of an office in College;
  • - rent-free residential accommodation (subject to a service charge) in College, subject to availability.

Further particulars for this post, including guidance on how to apply, can be downloaded from clicking the 'Apply' button above. Applications must be submitted to HR@sid.cam.ac.uk by 11:59pm on Sunday 26 July 2026, using the Application form found via the 'Apply' button above, and including a cover letter and a personal statement. Applications should include the names and addresses of THREE referees. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ask their referees to submit their references by the closing date for applications. Shortlisted candidates will be notified within ten working days of the application deadline, with interviews taking place during the week beginning Monday 3 August 2026.
