Description
The History Department at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications and expressions of interest from qualified candidates for appointment as the inaugural George and Bernice Wyss Phillipp Professor of History. Endowed professorships are among the highest honors at the College. We seek a historian with a record of distinguished scholarly achievement and with demonstrated research and teaching expertise in the History of Science and/or the History of Medicine. The Wyss Phillipp Professor will have the academic qualifications for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Department of History at the College of the Holy Cross.
The successful candidate will be expected to a) maintain an active research agenda and internationally significant academic profile, b) design interdisciplinary courses, mentor students across programs, and help broaden our curriculum in the history of science and/or medicine within the liberal arts by building bridges across disciplines, and c) take full part in College and departmental service obligations.
In addition to an established reputation of distinguished scholarly achievement, the Wyss Phillipp Professor will have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, including as illustrated by their use of evidence-based teaching strategies and course designs to create classroom environments where all students have a sense of belonging, are valued, and can flourish to reach their full potential.
The teaching load for this position is 3 courses per year. The salary and benefits, as well as sabbatical leave and research support policies, are nationally competitive. The academic year base salary range for appointments beginning in August 2027 is between $165,000 and $172,000. A dedicated research and professional development account is associated with the Professorship.
We anticipate that the Wyss Phillipp Professor will begin work at the College in August 2027.
