We generally welcome applicants from all specialisms whose work complements or extends our existing strengths. As part of last year’s hiring round, we have made several appointments in the area of Pure Mathematics. As a consequence, we only expect to hire pure mathematicians that can demonstrate a strong alignment to our growing Joint Mathematics and Computing undergraduate programme.

Imperial College London seeks several outstanding academics to join its Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. These appointments form part of an ambitious expansion to strengthen and diversify our research across the full spectrum of mathematical sciences.

The Department of Mathematics is consistently ranked among the very best worldwide.

This is an exceptional opportunity to advance your research career, collaborate across disciplines, and inspire the next generation of mathematical scientists.

What you would be doing:

As a member of our academic faculty, you will:

  • Conduct and publish innovative, internationally leading research within your field.
  • Contribute to teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Supervise and mentor PhD students and junior researchers.
  • Secure external research funding and build productive collaborations within and beyond Imperial.
  • Play an active role in the life and strategic development of the Department and the wider Faculty.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for colleagues and students.

Depending on your level of appointment, you may also:

  • Lead major research programmes and groups.
  • Contribute to departmental leadership and management.

What we are looking for:

We are seeking outstanding academics who are committed to excellence in research, teaching, and citizenship.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • A PhD in the Mathematical Sciences or in a closely related field, or equivalent.
  • A strong research record with publications of outstanding quality.
  • A clear plan to build or further develop an internationally leading research programme that enhances the Department’s profile.
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching and supervision of students.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills appropriate to your career stage.
  • For applicants in Pure Mathematics, a strong alignment to the Joint Mathematics and Computing programme.

At the Assistant Professor level, you will have clear potential to develop a national and international reputation.
At the Associate Professor level, you will have an established national profile and emerging international recognition.
At the Full Professor (Chair) level, you will already be recognised as an international leader in your field, with a record of significant research funding and impact.

Full details of duties, responsibilities, and criteria are available in the Job Description.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to advance your academic career at a world-leading institution dedicated to using science for the benefit of humanity.
  • Access to state-of-the-art facilities, including extensive departmental CPU/GPU computing resources and Imperial’s Research Computing Service.
  • A vibrant, interdisciplinary research culture, with partnerships such as the CNRS–Imperial de Moivre Laboratory.
  • Comprehensive professional development through Imperial’s Educational Development Unit and mentoring schemes.
  • A sector-leading remuneration package, including generous leave (41 days per year including public holidays and College closure days), excellent pension provision, and flexible working policies.
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources designed to support your personal and professional wellbeing. Both the department and Imperial hold an Athena SWAN Silver award.
