Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be responsible for developing effective working relationships within a multidisciplinary research team, including collaboration with senior members of staff and external partners. The role involves leading the assembly, management, and analysis of complex datasets, including the application of machine learning techniques to develop a range of models such as predictive and image-recognition models.

A key aspect of the role will be taking responsibility for the timely drafting of academic papers, as well as interim and final project reports, ensuring that research outputs are communicated clearly and effectively. The successful candidate will also lead on the presentation of research findings to a range of audiences, including research funders, academics, and policy makers, through seminars, national and international conferences, and other dissemination activities. In addition, the role requires active contribution to the development of new research proposals aimed at attracting external funding in collaboration with colleagues and selected external partners.

The Research Fellow will actively participate in the day-to-day activities of the BDTI Lab, contributing to the effective management and delivery of research projects while ensuring that tasks are appropriately prioritised within agreed work schedules. The role also involves liaising with project partners and undertaking any necessary training or professional development required to support the successful conduct of the research.

More broadly, the successful candidate will contribute to the academic life of the School through active participation in seminars, workshops, and other academic events.

Skills and experience required

The successful candidate will demonstrate substantial experience in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Experience in the use of Big Data Analytics, particularly within a research environment, would be advantageous.

The role requires a strong track record of high-quality academic publication, including publications as first author in international peer-reviewed high-quality journals. Experience of developing and writing research funding bids, with evidence of contributing to successful grant applications and the ability to consistently generate strong research proposals, would be highly desirable.

Qualifications required

Degree or master’s in mathematics, energy, construction, sustainability, computing or a related course.

A PhD or equivalent in a mathematics, energy, construction, sustainability, computing or a related subject area
