We are now seeking a talented and motivated Legal Counsel to join our Legal Services team at this exciting time.

About the role

This is a varied and rewarding in-house legal role, offering the opportunity to work across the full breadth of university activity. You will provide high-quality, pragmatic legal advice to colleagues across academic schools and professional services, supporting effective decision-making while managing legal risk.

Acting as a key contact within the Legal Services team, you will independently handle a wide range of matters, escalating more complex or high-risk issues where appropriate.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide expert legal advice across a broad range of areas, including commercial, corporate, and governance matters.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide variety of contracts and agreements.
  • Support the University in legal compliance and risk management, delivering clear, practical guidance.
  • Advise on when to engage external legal counsel and manage those relationships effectively.

Partnership and collaboration agreements, Joint ventures and franchise arrangements, International and apprenticeship-related agreements.

We are looking for a confident, collaborative legal professional who can provide practical, solution-focused advice in a complex and fast-paced environment, who has the following:

  • Qualified solicitor (or equivalent) with a proven track record of post-qualification experience.
  • Strong expertise in contract and commercial law.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence at all levels.
  • Highly organised, with attention to detail.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Experience working in the Higher Education or public sector would be an advantage.
  • Experience in dealing with complaints and litigation / dispute resolution would also be an advantage.
