The role

Do you have a background in Biomedical sciences and are passionate about practical scientific education? Are you looking for a dynamic work environment where no two days are the same? We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Laboratory Technician to join the team within the Biomedical Sciences Teaching Laboratories.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the technical team in an innovative university teaching laboratory, where you will be contributing to teaching preparation and the technical operations of a large multi-discipline laboratory and can make a real impact on the student learning experience.

You will join the Pharmacology teaching technical team, working under the guidance of the lead teaching technician and the other team members to support the day-to-day setup and running of the Pharmacology teaching lab. There are 100’s of undergraduate and post-graduate students attending practical sessions weekly and the technical team provide essential support for the infrastructure, equipment and providing all the components necessary for a range of teaching sessions. Techniques you would be using include tissue dissection and preparation, cell culture, micro-organism preparation as well as making complex physiological buffers and drug stock solutions.

This is a term-time only contract (37 weeks/year), working 35hrs/week, Monday – Friday.

What will you be doing?

  • Preparing a variety of materials to be used by students in teaching sessions such as buffer solutions, drug stock solutions, isolated animal tissue preparations (including dissections), simulated patient samples.
  • Maintaining levels of stock solutions and the chemical inventory in the preparation lab.
  • Offering troubleshooting and support to the academic staff and students during sessions.
  • Enforcing local safety rules and maintaining the standards of behaviour we expect from laboratory users.
  • Contribute towards lab operational activities e.g. equipment maintenance, repair and cleaning, as well as safety records and inventories.
  • Laying out equipment/instruments at each student station.
  • Clearing away at the end of sessions and making sure the lab is safe and ready for its next use.
  • Follow Health & Safety guidelines in the removal and handling of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
  • Set up display equipment, e.g. AV aids, or display boards.

You should apply if

  • You have experience working in a busy Biomedical sciences (or similar) shared lab environment
  • Are motivated in your own tasks but also towards a larger team goal
  • You are organised and able to multi-task to meet deadlines
  • Are someone with good problem-solving skills and a high level of attention to detail
  • You have previous experience in customer service or service delivery roles
  • An effective clear communicator with the confidence to enforce local safety rules and uphold the standards we expect of our laboratory users
  • Have a track record of working well as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including, Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams.
  • You are committed to providing quality technical support for delivery of practical teaching in Pharmacology.
