Atlantic Technological University [ATU], Ulster University [UU] with Tyndall National Institute [Tyndall] have been successful in winning €8.46 million PEACEPLUS funding for the establishment of the Semiconductor Photonics Education and Research (SPEAR) Centre. The centre will develop a Photonics research, training and innovation response to challenges outlined in the EU Chips Act 2023 and will simultaneously address existing deficits in high-skill/high-value employment and research infrastructure in the border region.
SPEAR will focus on photonics system integration, prototyping of systems and boosting smart manufacturing innovation in Photonics using AI. Central to the project’s aims is the establishment of an Industrial Innovation Fund which will identify and deliver shorter form innovation projects providing photonics knowledge/skills and system integration/prototyping solutions for SMEs. Critical to this is the employment of senior research engineers and PRDAs to lead and implement the industrial innovation projects into SMEs across the border region.
