Join us at the world-leading CRUK Cambridge Institute. We're a unique department of the University of Cambridge, core funded by Cancer Research UK's charitable activities, and we're eagerly searching for a Research Data Manager to join our IT and Scientific Computing team. 

The Research Data Manager will be responsible for creating and implementing data management standards to ensure the integrity, security, and quality of research data, and to aid in the joint analysis of multiple datasets from different core facilities and research projects. They will work closely with research groups, faculty, core facilities, and the IT and Scientific Computing Department to establish best practices for data management. metadata standards, championing best practice and policy compliance. 

Key Responsibilities:

Data Management Standards: 

  • Establish Institute wide project, experiment, and sample tracking and identity framework
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive metadata standards to support research activities and data analysis across different research domains and disciplines
  • Collaborate with Faculty and researchers to understand their specific data needs and ensure that standards align with the research objectives of different discipline

Collaboration with IT and Scientific Computing: 

  • Work closely with the IT and Scientific Computing department, which manages the hardware infrastructure (e.g. servers, cloud storage), to align data management standards with technical infrastructure
  • Facilitate communication between Faculty, researchers, and IT to ensure data storage and archiving solutions meet the needs of academic research 

Data Quality, Integrity and Metadata Curation: 

  • Define and encourage the adoption of a subset of metadata standards specific to individual research domains (e.g. Light Microscopy, Histopathology, Proteomics) to ensure datasets are well-documented and accessible. And that simple cross domain searches and analysis are feasible.
  • Implement protocols for data validation, quality control, and metadata curation
  • Train Faculty and researcher on metadata annotation, data documentation, and best practices for ensuring high-quality, reusable data

Training, Support and Standards Development: 

  • Provide training and support to staff and researchers on data management
  • Collaborate with Faculty to develop institutional policies on data governance
  • Share good practice advice, promote and encourage the adoption of the Institute's Electronic Lab Notebook

Collaboration and Innovation:

  • Collaborate with Faculty, IT, and research teams to refine data governance frameworks and address emerging challenges
  • Stay informed on new developments in metadata standards, research tools, and data management practices to support innovative research
