Assistant Professor (Research & Education)

The Department of Psychology at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Psychology. We welcome outstanding candidates from all areas of psychology whose research applies computational approaches, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to address research questions in psychology and/or neuroscience.

The successful candidate will join one of the UK's leading Psychology departments, ranked in the UK Top 10 and among the world's Top 100: https://www.dur.ac.uk/departments/academic/psychology/

They will strengthen and complement one or more of the Department's research groups: Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Science, and Quantitative Social Psychology. This appointment reflects the Department's strategic investment in computational and data-driven research, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and methodological innovation.

The Department of Psychology is an internationally recognised centre for research excellence spanning the breadth of psychological and behavioural science. Our three research groups underpin a vibrant research environment and each leads a specialist taught Master's programme.

The Department also hosts University Research Centres in neurodiversity and development, vision and visual cognition, learning and memory, and behavioural science, fostering collaboration across disciplines to address major scientific and societal challenges.

Applicants should demonstrate an excellent research profile, with the potential to secure external funding and contribute to the Department's internationally recognised research. They should also have the ability to deliver outstanding teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and to contribute fully to the service, citizenship, and values of the University.

Recent multi-million-pound investment in research and teaching infrastructure has equipped the Department with outstanding facilities to support cutting-edge psychological and behavioural science. These include dedicated laboratories for EEG, TMS, tDCS, fNIRS, eye tracking, virtual reality, psychophysiology, and behavioural neuroscience, alongside a large whole-body motion capture laboratory, a fully equipped molecular diagnostics laboratory, an echo-attenuated chamber, and a suite of observation laboratories. Staff benefit from access to these shared facilities across the Department, supported by award-winning IT specialists and technical staff, enabling innovative research across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
