About the Role
This is a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate post for 2 years, funded through a Medical Research Council (MRC) grant. The postholder will lead or support an imaging-genomics research programme with two main strands: (i) bioinformatics experiments to unravel the genetic basis of cardiovascular diseases and discover novel therapeutic targets, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS), fine-mapping, colocalisation, polygenic risk scoring, and Mendelian Randomisation; and (ii) deep phenotyping of multi-modal cardiovascular imaging (MRI, CT, echocardiography) from large-scale, diverse datasets using machine learning and AI techniques. Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and public engagement.
About You
You will hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in statistical genomics, genetic epidemiology, data science, computing, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, or a related field. You will have significant experience in statistical genetics or genomics research, demonstrated through a peer-reviewed publication record, and excellent programming skills (Python, R, Linux, GitHub). Experience wrangling and analysing large-scale datasets, including resources such as UK Biobank, is essential. You will be self-motivated, able to work independently, and committed to collaborative team science. Experience integrating routinely collected healthcare data with clinical and biomarker datasets, and supervision of junior researchers, would be advantageous.

The William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) is a world-leading centre within the QMUL Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, devoted to therapeutic innovation in cardiovascular, endocrine and inflammatory diseases. The Centre for Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging, established in 2010 and closely linked to the Department of Imaging at Barts Heart Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust, applies statistical, epidemiological, multi-omics and machine learning approaches to national-scale imaging cohorts including UK Biobank and Our Future Health. Our research is multidisciplinary, with collaborators across leading academic centres in the USA, Europe and Asia. The postholder will have opportunities to develop their academic profile in data science, machine learning and statistical genetics within a friendly, accessible and internationally connected team.
