Job description:

The Role

The purpose of the role is to support growth, capacity, and capability in academic primary care with a particular focus on underserved areas for example within the Deep End GP network in collaboration with Public Health.

The three NHS shifts into the community represents a timely opportunity for primary care and public health to grow research in wider care settings together to support the clinical teams to deliver the "neighbourhood health" agenda. However, recruitment to research in more deprived populations tends to be lower and even more significantly lower in "Deep End" practices. Further, those from socioeconomically disadvantaged populations tend to be under-represented in research, which can further exacerbate health inequalities. With the growing maturity of our Deep End networks, primary care academic workforce and public health expertise in the region, this role enables builds on this to develop academic and research capacity within the Deep End network.

Training, Support, and Development

* You will have the opportunity to receive Masters level training with a training plan developed at the start of the role
* You will be mentored and receive support from experienced senior primary care (Dr Eugene Tang) and public health (Dr. Sarah Sowden) clinical academics with the aim of developing their own research interests, experiences and skills in primary care research
* You will be supported by and be part of an emerging group of clinical academics as a member of the Academic Primary and Community Care Unit (APCCU) and will have the opportunity to work alongside Public Health colleagues in this role. The APCCU is a virtual unit which aims to bring together leading experts within primary and community care systems to build capacity in academic primary and community care within the region

This is a part-time role (0.2 FTE, 8 hours per week) on a fixed term basis for up to 12 months.

The start date is 1 September 2026.

You will be employed at Newcastle University as a GP Clinical Research Associate in the role of Deep End GP Research Fellow.

Willingness to travel is an essential part of this role.

To apply please submit a covering letter and CV outlining how you meet the essential criteria.
