Associate Professor in Implementation Science for Global Eye Health

This is a rare opportunity to co-lead one of the world’s leading academic programmes in implementation science for global eye health, at the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH), LSHTM’s WHO Collaborating Centre for Eye Care and Vision. For four decades, ICEH’s landmark research and internationally renowned MSc in Public Health for Eye Care have shaped global eye health leadership.

This appointment builds on ICEH’s partnership with Peek Vision, validated through 50+ peer-reviewed publications and now reaching more than 150,000 people every week across Africa and Asia — one of the world’s richest real-world evidence platforms for equitable eye health. With over one billion people living with preventable vision impairment, this role offers rare scope to generate influential evidence at population scale.

The post-holder will lead independent research, secure funding, supervise doctoral researchers, and help shape the next generation of global eye health leaders — reporting to Professor Andrew Bastawrous, Founder/CEO of Peek Vision, and working with Professor Matthew Burton, ICEH Director and founding Trustee of Peek.

The successful applicant will have a doctoral degree in a relevant topic (Relevant Fields include: ophthalmology, optometry, public/global health, epidemiology, clinical trials, implementation science, health services research), expertise in global/public eye health research and/or in implementation science applied to global health programmes in low- and middle-income countries, a consistent and significant track record of attracting research grant income, including salary recovery, from major research funders (PI, co-PI or leadership within a large proposal such as work-package lead), an understanding of the strategies for improving equity and inclusion in research and/or learning and teaching. The post is full-time (with part-time appointment at no less than 0.8 FTE considered for exceptional candidates) and fixed term initially for three years, with strong potential for extension subject to future research funding. The post is funded through a strategic partnership grant from the Peek Vision Foundation to ICEH-LSHTM.

The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 8 in the range £64,469–£73,994 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting), depending on experience. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff, plus discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM, with hybrid working available (minimum two days on-site per week).
