Tenure: The HoD will be offered for an initial period of five years initially, with potential to extend for a further five-year period.  The Professorial appointment is a substantive permanent academic role.

The Faculty of Health & Life Sciences seeks to appoint a Chair in Biochemistry and Head of Department (HoD) for the Department of Biochemistry, Cell & Systems Biology within the Institute of Systems, Molecular & Integrative Biology.

The appointee should have a strong track record in team science, attracting significant funding and delivering substantial impact in an area complementary to our existing research themes.

The HoD is responsible for developing strategies and implementing plans at Departmental level and will have significant responsibility for staff line management, including workload management and all aspects of staff development. They lead on refining and implementing plans to build local, national and international research partnerships, and to develop and deliver world-class education programmes. They provide leadership in contributing to the on-going development and oversight of the institute’s strategic plan and are an active member of the Institute Leadership and Executive Teams.

The HoD will be supported in their duties by a Deputy HoD, a Head of Research, a Head of Research-Led Teaching and a Departmental Administrator.  It is expected that the HoD will have a strong strategic understanding of relevant UK/EU research plans and priorities, notably UKRI, alongside international and charity remits, and maintain research and teaching activity (pro rata) alongside the role responsibilities.

The role of the Head of Department will be for five years initially. The Professorial appointment is a substantive permanent academic role.  Any appointment to this post will be subject to the University’s standard conditions of appointment. No person other than the Director of Human Resources has authority to notify a variation in these conditions.

The HoD role has a tariff of 0.5 FTE and an honorarium payment of £9,000 pa in addition to the role holder’s salary. The HoD reports to Professor Tony Marson, Dean of the Institute of Systems, Molecular & Integrative Biology.
