Academic Skills and Library Support Tutor

About the Role

The Global Institute of Sport (GIS) is looking for an Academic Skills and Library Support Tutor to join our award-winning Academic Services team. This newly created role (0.8 FTE Academic Skills / 0.2 FTE Library Support) sits at the heart of our academic support offering, helping students across our global, fully online community develop the academic writing, research and study skills they need to succeed.

You will also ensure students can access and make effective use of library and information resources provided through our university partners, the University of East London (UEL) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Some flexibility to work across time zones may be required to support GIS's global student body.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality 1:1 and small-group academic skills tutorials covering academic writing, referencing, critical thinking, research skills and time management.
• Design and deliver academic skills workshops and webinars, embedded within the curriculum and available pan-institution.
• Develop and maintain a digital hub of self-help academic skills resources accessible to students across all time zones.
• Provide tailored support to international students and those with additional learning needs, including neurodiverse students.
• Liaise with academic teams to identify students who would benefit from additional support and embed skills development within taught modules.
• Support students' access to library resources, including e-books, journals, databases and reading lists, and respond promptly to library queries.
• Assist with the maintenance of reading lists and resource lists in collaboration with UEL and VUB library services.
• Support inter-library loan and document access requests, referring students to partner library services as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate records of student engagement with academic skills and library support provision.
• Attend and support GIS open days, taster sessions and webinars as required.

About You

Essential:

• A degree or equivalent qualification.
• Experience designing and delivering academic skills, study skills or learning support in a Higher Education setting.
• Experience supporting students on a 1:1 basis and in group workshop settings.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confident online presentation skills.
• Good IT skills, including confident use of virtual learning environments and remote collaboration tools.
• Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload while fully remote.
• Highly organised, self-motivated and able to prioritise a dual-function workload.
• An empathetic, student-focused approach and a growth mindset.

Desirable:

• A postgraduate qualification in academic skills, education, English for Academic Purposes or a related field.
• A qualification in Librarianship or Information Science, or working towards chartership.
• Experience working in an academic or university library service.
• Experience supporting distance learning, online, international and/or neurodiverse students.
• Experience working across cross-departmental teams remotely.
• Familiarity with academic integrity/similarity-checking software (e.g. Turnitin) and library systems or electronic resource platforms.
• A passion for widening participation, student success, sport and/or education.
