Founded in 1919, AUC moved to a new 260-acre state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo in 2008.  The university also operates in its historic downtown facilities, offering cultural events, graduate classes, and continuing education.  Student housing is available in New Cairo.  Among the premier universities in the region, AUC is Middle States accredited; its engineering programs are accredited by ABET, its chemistry program is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the School of Business is accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS, and the Master of Public Administration and the Master of Public Policy programs of GAPP are accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and administration (NASPAA).  The AUC libraries contain the largest English-language research collection in the region and are an active and integral part of the university's pursuit of excellence in all academic and scholarly programs.  AUC is an English-medium institution; eighty-five percent of the students are Egyptian, and the rest include students from nearly ninety countries, principally from the Middle East, Africa and North America. Job Description:

The Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology (SEA) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) is seeking to recruit an Assistant or Associate Professor of Sociology. The area of expertise is open but special consideration will be given to those who can demonstrate the capacity to teach and supervise in subfields - such as urban, environmental and legal sociology - that expand and complement the sociology unit's areas of specialization. The position will be subject to a four-year contract with opportunities for renewal where the candidate is able to meet departmental renewal and promotion criteria. Candidates with experience in and familiarity with the North American higher education system are preferred.

Requirements:

A PhD in Sociology or a closely related field and a demonstrable record of teaching that illustrates an ability to teach a variety of courses in the BA in Sociology and the MA in Sociology and Anthropology programs at AUC, with special consideration given to those who can demonstrate the capacity to teach our offerings related to the Middle East and North Africa. Special consideration will also be given to those who can demonstrate the capacity to teach and supervise in subfields - such as urban, environmental and legal sociology - that expand and complement the sociology unit's areas of specialization. Candidates must also demonstrate an active research and publication record commensurate with their rank as well as experience of service and program administration. 

Additional Information:

Priority will be given to applications that are submitted by 8 December 2026. Preliminary interviews will be held in February 2027. Final interviews will be held in Cairo in mid- to late March 2027. Faculty members may also be available for informational discussions about the position at the Middle East Studies Association Annual Meeting in Boston 21-24 November 2026.
