A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, to work on the modelling and simulation of contrail formation as part of a research project investigating the effects of future aviation fuels and engine technologies on aviation's non-CO2 climate impacts.
The successful candidate will be based at the Whittle Laboratory in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are to undertake research on the modelling and simulation of contrail formation by carrying out computational studies, extending existing modelling capabilities where appropriate, analysing simulation results, and contributing to the scientific objectives of the project. The post holder will also disseminate research findings through publications and conference presentations and contribute to the wider activities of the research group
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are that the successful candidate has obtained, or is close to obtaining, a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. They should have a strong background in computational fluid dynamics, with experience in compressible flows, turbulence, and multiphase flows involving phase change. Experience with numerical methods, scientific programming, and high-performance computing is desirable. The successful candidate should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges:
Research Assistant: £33,002 - £35,608
Research Associate: £37,694 - £46,049
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
