Background of Department

The School of Social Work, Education and Teacher Education (SWETE) is home to a vibrant Initial Teacher Education (ITE) department, delivering high-quality provision across the Primary, Secondary, and Further Education and Skills phases. Within this, the Primary ITE team offers a dynamic and research-informed portfolio of courses, preparing subject specialists to become reflective, resilient, and impactful teachers.

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Primary Initial Teacher Education, specialising in English, Maths and Science. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with trainees across a range of routes, supporting them to develop strong subject knowledge, pedagogical expertise, and inclusive classroom practice. Having a background or interest in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to support our commitment to inclusive education would be beneficial.

The role also involves contributing to the design, review, and enhancement of ITE programmes, ensuring that courses remain innovative, coherent, and responsive to national priorities and partnership needs. You will provide pastoral and academic support to trainees, monitoring their progress and wellbeing, and intervening effectively where additional support is required.

Who are we looking for?

You will play a central role in planning and teaching within the ITE curriculum, ensuring that sessions are engaging, research-informed, and closely aligned with current school practice. In addition, you will undertake regular school check-ins with mentors and trainees, including some site visits to support the quality assurance of school-based training and trainee assessment, working closely with school-based mentors to ensure high-quality training experiences and consistent progress.

As part of a university community committed to research and impact, you will be expected to engage with Research, Enterprise and Knowledge Mobilisation (REKM) activity, contributing to scholarly work, professional dialogue, and the dissemination of best practice. There will also be opportunities to support recruitment through interviewing and selection processes, and to contribute to wider academic module delivery across the Primary ITE provision.

This role would suit those already working in Higher Education ITE, as well as experienced school practitioners looking to transition into a university-based role while maintaining strong links with practice.

The commitment to achieving a PhD or EdD and Fellowship of the HEA within a suitable timeframe should be clearly demonstrated in the application, if these are otherwise missing.

Due to the role, a driving is a desirable requirement - the successful person will be asked to complete work as a link tutor in our schools and so will need to drive to schools (close in distance ideally to their home), to support the mentoring and trainees who will be on their school experience placements in school.

How will you work?

Candidates need to be available to work Monday - Friday, with some flexibility at certain points of the year (e.g. August Clearing (3 days) and some Saturday Open Days). There is some flexibility to work from home on non-teaching days.
