About us

This position is part of the ELEMENTAL Hub, a UK-wide collaboration focused on tackling the growing demand for critical minerals in clean energy technologies while supporting a circular economy. Led by the University of Kent and funded by a £12.4M BBSRC/UKRI award,the Hub brings together academic and industry partners, including UCL, to develop sustainable solutions for metal extraction and recovery. Using cutting-edge engineering biology approaches, ELEMENTAL advances research in mining, urban and industrial waste, helping address environmental challenges and create renewable inputs for future technologies.

About the role

A new Postdoctoral Research Assistant position in Bioprocess Design for Metal Recovery is now available. Based in the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering, the post will work on their own scale-up case study and contribute to developing best practice for designing bioprocesses for recovery of criti cal metals. The post holder will be one of a team of UCL-based researchers working as part of ELEMENTAL, as well as several academic and industrial collaborators. The PURR will be based within the world-class biotechnology facilities at the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering. There will be a high degree of interaction with ELEMENTAL colleagues working at other UK locations and with industrial partners so excellent team-working and communication skills will be required. The post holder will be responsible for undertaking original research, reporting on project progress and the preparation and submission of research papers arising from these and related studies. This post is funded for 2 years in the first instance.

About you

You will hold a doctorate (or equivalent) in a relevant process engineering field e.g Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline such as Biotechnology and/or ideally possess experience in one or more of the fo llowing areas: bioprocess modelling, upstream or downstream processing, and bioremediation.
