Online Tutor MSc Dementia

CEG Digital wishes to engage the services of a self-employed contractor as an Online Tutor for our MSc Dementia programme run in partnership with the University of Hull.

We are looking for candidates with experience of teaching in higher education and substantial professional experience in palliative care and/or dementia. Ideally, applicants will hold a master's degree or PhD in a discipline with a specific focus on palliative care and/or dementia. Candidates should also be confident in facilitating and leading online discussions and supporting student learning in a virtual environment. 

Role Description

The Online Tutor plays a vital role in the success and delivery of the University's online programmes, providing an active academic presence within assigned modules. Online Tutors are typically the first point of contact for students with academic queries.

Each Online Tutor is allocated a group of up to 30 students. Fees are paid on a fixed-rate basis according to the number of students allocated, with the fee schedule and class size confirmed prior to the module start date. 

During a module, the Online Tutor will:

• Deliver a weekly one-hour online webinar.
• Facilitate student engagement through asynchronous learning activities.
• Respond to and triage student queries.
• Provide academic support and guidance.
• First-mark summative assessments in accordance with University regulations and marking criteria.

This is a flexible, part-time opportunity. However, tutors will be expected to meet key deadlines and participate in mandatory activities linked to the University's academic calendar and assessment schedule. Full details will be provided before the commencement of each module.

Our MSc in Dementia takes a person-centred approach, informed by experiences of people with dementia, their families, and supporters, critically challenges common perceptions of dementia as a diagnosis solely of loss and despair. Focusing on a human rights approach, students will learn how to maintain the wellbeing and dignity of people living with dementia, while promoting the philosophy and practice of living, as well as possible, with dementia. More information on the course can be found on the University of Hull website.  

This Online Tutor role is for the delivery of the Dying Well with Dementia module. This module has been co-created in an exciting partnership between the University of Hull and Dove House Hospice in Hull, to bring together expertise in dementia care and palliative care. For this module, the Online Tutor will encourage students to engage in a critical reading and understanding of the ongoing debates about how we address the challenge of improving care and support available to people with dementia and their families at the end of their lives. The module’s focus centres on what a good death in dementia might look like and how people can be supported to die well. The module has a clear practice focus with students being encouraged to reflect on the barriers that prevent and limit access to high quality care and how they can begin to improve the care and support available for people with dementia. The module encourages students to reflect on the parallels between the ethos of palliative care and person-centred dementia care.
