Are you an experienced technical leader with a passion for supporting world-class teaching and research in a scientific environment?

As Technical Manager, you will lead a specialist technical team, providing high-quality research and teaching support.  Combining technical expertise with operational leadership, you will oversee specialist facilities, equipment and laboratory environments, ensuring an outstanding customer experience for all. Working closely with the IT and Technical Services Manager and academic colleagues, you will help shape the future of technical services by driving continuous improvement, leading change and supporting strategic objectives.

As Technical Manager you can expect to be involved in:

  • Managing technical teams across a broad subject area, planning, overseeing the allocation of work to both technicians, specialists and supervisors. Ensuring tasks are completed to a high standard and within agreed timeframes and that changes are implemented effectively. Collaborating and working with relevant senior management and academics in all matters relating to the delivery of technical services in the subject area. Ensuring work of others is carried out and performed to the required standard.
  • Designing, developing and delivering inductions, training and demonstrations of a broad range of activities (not limited to techniques and equipment), to staff, students and external stakeholders. Whilst doing so, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory policy
  • Providing operational oversight of a technical team. Providing support to the IT and Technical Services Manager to deliver a Technical Services Strategy.

What will you bring to the role?

  • University degree, Higher National Diploma / equivalent experience in a relevant subject.
  • Experience of managing a team providing technical services.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary projects, working within defined timescales and financial limits within technical services
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate, negotiate, influence staff, students and external stakeholders
