Research Fellow in Health Economics within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Greater Manchester

We wish to appoint an exceptional, motivated and collaborative Research Fellow in Health Economics to join the Evidence Synthesis and Generation research theme of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Greater Manchester (NIHR ARC-GM), based at the University of Manchester. NIHR ARC-GM aims to undertake timely, needs-driven and transformative applied health and social care research to benefit communities locally and nationally.

The postholder will support the design and conduct of economic evaluations alongside rapid and responsive evaluations, using methods such as cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis and return on investment. Working with partners and end users, the postholder will interrogate available data, address the uncertainties faced by decision makers and ensure that analyses can be meaningfully interpreted by a range of audiences. The role offers the opportunity to deliver timely insights into whether innovations provide sufficient benefits relative to their costs, helping to guide implementation, scaling or de-implementation. It also offers the potential to contribute to methodological development, including adapting economic evaluation approaches for rapid evidence synthesis and short-timescale evaluations.

The successful candidate will work with Professor Jo Dumville, Dr Lucy O’Malley and other members of the NIHR ARC-GM team and will be based in the Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health.

You will be responsible for:

• Designing and implementing health economics research drawing on robust statistical approaches in an appropriate software such as (but not limited to) STATA or R
• Analysing real work health and care data to explore the value for money offered by innovations or new ways of working, being able to do this rapidly if required
• Structuring, populating and analysing decision analytic models
• Leading the co-production of research with external stakeholders
• Contributing to the design, conduct and analysis of research under the direction of Theme Leads, leading elements of it

About You:

Essential Criteria:

• Relevant academic training and a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject such as health economics
• Substantial experience of developing and implementing innovation-focused economic analysis using routine data, comparative data and decision analytical models
• Substantial experience in at least one software package used in statistical analysis of economic data and/or implementing decision-models (e.g. R, Stata, WinBUGS/OpenBUGS)
• Able to design, conduct and deliver complex economic evaluations
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with good attention to detail
