An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary project team studying cholera transmission, the effect of oral cholera vaccination (OCV) and the performance of cholera diagnostics in Uvira, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The postholder will be a member of the Environmental Health Group at LSHTM and work closely with project team members from the University of Geneva.  

The postholder will play a critical role in the design, development and implementation of research and laboratory protocols, as well as coordinating and managing field data collection, supervision of laboratory teams, data management and analysis, and publication of scientific articles. The post will involve remote supervision of laboratory teams and may require considerable travel to the study site in Uvira, DRC (dependent on security situation in eastern DRC), and some travel to our partner laboratories in Bujumbura, Burundi and Kinshasa, DRC or other regional laboratories. 

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic, and relevant experience working with bacterial pathogens (culture, contamination control and safe laboratory practices), using molecular microbiology techniques (DNA extraction and qPCR) and handling human and environmental samples (stool, water, swabs, and/or blood). Experience as a study coordinator and/or managing fieldwork/survey teams is also essential. Excellent written and spoken English and French are essential to the position. The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 30 September 2027. The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and Gates Foundation and is available from 15 September 2026.

The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 6 in the range £45,728 - £51,872 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
