Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost

The University of Sussex is seeking an outstanding academic leader to join our Executive Team as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost.

This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of a distinctive, progressive globally oriented research-intensive university at a pivotal moment. Working in close partnership with the Vice-Chancellor and President, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost will provide strategic leadership across the University, driving the delivery of our ambitious Sussex 2035 strategy and ensuring we continue to excel in research, innovation, education and student experience.

You will provide leadership for our academic community, working closely with the Faculties and their Executive Deans, and you will work collaboratively with the Pro-Vice-Chancellors and our professional service leaders to develop and deliver an integrated academic strategy, lead academic transformation, and ensure the sustainable growth and success of our academic portfolio. You will play a central role in institutional planning, resource allocation and performance improvement, ensuring that academic priorities are aligned with financial sustainability and long-term institutional ambitions.

The role requires an individual who can provide visible, inspiring leadership across a complex organisation in challenging times, and who is able to build strong partnerships internally and externally. You will champion excellence in education, research and innovation, strengthen our national and international reputation, and enhance Sussex's contribution to regional, national and global communities.

We are looking for a candidate with significant senior leadership experience in research-intensive university environments, and a distinguished academic record at professorial level. You will have experience of delivering strategic and cultural change, driving improvements in organisational performance, developing high-performing teams, and leading complex institutions through periods of opportunity and challenge. Strong financial and commercial judgement, highly developed influencing skills, and a deep understanding of the higher education policy and funding landscape are essential.

You will share our commitments to academic excellence, diversity, inclusion, academic freedom, and freedom of speech, and to creating an environment in which every student and member of staff is able to flourish.

Most importantly, you will be inspired to want to deliver our 10 year strategy  - Sussex 2035: Creating Progressive Futures – flourishing, sustainability and progress for the whole world  -  and its transformational themes of digital and data futures, environmental sustainability and human flourishing

If you are an ambitious, collaborative and values-driven leader who wants to help shape the next chapter of an internationally recognised university, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The closing date for all applications, which should be in the form of a CV and cover letter, and addressed to sussexdvcp@minervasearch.com, is 14th September.

The University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. The University particularly welcomes applications from women, people from black and minority ethnic communities, and from disabled people who are underrepresented in our top pay quarter.
