ABOUT US

Transforming lives through excellent education

London Metropolitan University is a striving and ambitious institution committed to transforming the lives of its students through excellent education.

We are committed to making education available to people from all walks of life, creating and advancing social justice, social mobility and access to opportunity and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute to society, culture, public service and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and around the world.

ABOUT THE POST
The Department of Student Services wishes to appoint an experienced, accredited counsellor to join its busy and dynamic counselling service on a full-time basis. Applicants must hold current BACP Accreditation (or equivalent accreditation with UKCP or NCPS).

This campus-based role requires attendance across campuses and offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a student-centred service that supports wellbeing, engagement, retention, achievement and student success.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of working within a Higher Education environment, or a related educational setting, and will have a strong understanding of the challenges faced by students. They will be familiar with working in institutions where supporting students to remain engaged, overcome barriers and achieve positive academic outcomes forms a central part of the organisational mission.

Working within a brief intervention framework, the post-holder will provide time-limited counselling through a Single Session Therapy (SST) model, alongside other appropriate short-term therapeutic interventions. They will be confident managing a diverse and complex caseload, undertaking risk assessments, and working collaboratively to ensure students receive the right level of support.

The post-holder will work closely with the Counselling Service Manager and colleagues across Student Services and the wider University to improve access, engagement and outcomes for students, particularly those from underrepresented and marginalised groups. They will contribute to the ongoing development of an innovative, responsive and evidence-informed counselling service that supports students both personally and academically.

We are seeking a counsellor who combines strong therapeutic skills with a proactive and solution-focused approach. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, creativity and confidence in identifying emerging student needs and responding effectively. They will be comfortable using service data, student feedback and sector insights to design, develop and evaluate resources, psychoeducational materials, workshops, outreach activities and wellbeing campaigns that enhance student engagement and support.

A key aspect of the role will be developing and maintaining strong collaborative relationships across the University. The post-holder will also work confidently with external organisations and specialist agencies, particularly where students present with complex needs, significant risk factors or safeguarding concerns, ensuring effective referral pathways and coordinated support arrangements.

The post-holder will support the Counselling Manager in developing activities aimed at improving awareness, accessibility and engagement with the counselling service. This will include delivering drop-in support, attending student-facing events, promoting mental health and wellbeing initiatives, contributing to staff consultation and training, and supporting the wider University community in responding effectively to student wellbeing concerns.

This post will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
