Help shape the science that protects public health
Would you like to apply your scientific expertise to some of the most important public health challenges facing the UK? The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is seeking a skilled and curious scientist or engineer to join our Electromagnetic Field Dosimetry (EMFD) Group. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to nationally significant research, influence public health policy, and help assess the impact of established and emerging technologies on people and communities across the UK. As part of UKHSA's Radiation, Chemical, Climate and Environment (RCCE) Hazards Directorate, you will join a team of specialists providing trusted scientific advice on electromagnetic fields (EMF), supporting research, regulation, standards development and emergency response activities.
The role
Technology is evolving rapidly, from mobile communications and telecommunications infrastructure to new and emerging wireless systems. Understanding and assessing human exposure to electromagnetic fields is crucial to ensuring public confidence and protecting health. As a Higher EMF Scientist, you will play a key role in delivering scientific research, exposure assessments and specialist services. Working across laboratory, field and computational environments, you will investigate EMF exposures, develop innovative assessment methodologies, and contribute to evidence that informs national and international policy. No two days are the same.
What you'll be doing
-Conduct laboratory and field-based assessments of exposure to electromagnetic fields.
-Use advanced scientific equipment, including spectrum analysers, network analysers and specialised measurement systems.
-Analyse and interpret scientific data to assess human exposure to EMF technologies.
-Develop and improve exposure assessment methodologies, models and measurement techniques.
-Contribute to research projects, technical reports, scientific publications, training and presentations.
-Support national monitoring programmes and provide expert technical advice.
-Maintain specialist laboratory facilities, equipment and quality systems.
-Work within project management frameworks.
-Support UKHSA's response to radiological and environmental emergencies.
What we're looking for
-A degree in electrical/electronic engineering, physics or another relevant physical science discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
-Knowledge of electromagnetic fields and their practical applications.
-Experience using scientific measurement equipment.
-A strong understanding of electromagnetic theory.
-Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
-Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
-Full UK driving licence (due to role and locations).
