Research Support Assistant

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of social care researchers funded by the NIHR School for Social Care Research at the University of Bristol’s School for Policy Studies, where a highly motivated and well-organised Research Support Assistant will contribute to studies and build a future in social care research.

The role is suited to someone with an undergraduate and/or Master’s degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience, who is interested in pursuing a research career or PhD in social care.

What will you be doing?

Working under the supervision of project leads and senior researchers, the postholder will develop skills in research methods—including literature searches, secondary analysis, and data collection—while helping to plan, prepare, and conduct research and contribute to publications and outputs.  

The postholder will  

• Assist with applications for ethical approvals and ensure compliance with relevant governance and research standards. 
• Contribute to the preparation of publications, reports, and other dissemination outputs, including plain English versions to support the accessible dissemination of research findings. 
• Contribute to dissemination activities, including seminars, workshops and conferences. 
• Consider the public engagement and impact of the research and contribute to relevant activities where appropriate. 

The role also offers training and development opportunities to support progression to future Research Assistant positions, along with guidance from the line manager and project team, and may include the chance to contribute to an application for an NIHR-funded PhD studentship in open competition. 

You should apply if:

• Experience of conducting academic research, for example at undergraduate or master's level, in a field relevant to this role.
• Knowledge of a range of research methods and techniques, with the ability to apply them effectively.
• The ability to analyse information and data and communicate findings clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Strong digital and IT skills, including experience of using online tools and social media to support research, communication and engagement activities.
• Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage your own workload and resources effectively to ensure projects are delivered on time.
• Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to explain complex information through presentations, demonstrations and written materials.
• The ability to work independently, using your initiative while seeking guidance when needed.
• A genuine interest in adult social care research and a commitment to generating meaningful impact in this area.
• The willingness to travel to the Bristol office and other locations as required for meetings, events and research activities.

Additional information

Contract type: Open-ended with fixed funding until 31/05/29

Work pattern: 35 hours, 1 FTE. Part-time is considered.

Hybrid working: This role offers flexible hybrid working, with regular attendance required at on-campus meetings and events in Bristol, alongside occasional travel to locations across the UK.
