Early Career Research Fellow in Philosophy of Psychiatry

Location: Faculty of Philosophy, Stephen A Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Oxford OX2 6G

Applications are invited for a full-time Early Career Research Fellow in Philosophy of Psychiatry to work on the Mental Health Goals (MHG) project. This position will be especially suitable for a candidate with a strong research background in philosophy, especially philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychiatry, philosophy of medicine, and/or the ethics and epistemology of the patient’s encounter with mental health services. This position thus presents an outstanding opportunity in an applied and interdisciplinary field of research, both for career development as a philosopher and to develop interdisciplinary and interprofessional ways of working. This post is fixed term until 31 March 2030.

The Mental Health Goals (MHG) programme aims to create an innovative alliance between people with mental health conditions – whose views are often not prioritised – and industry – who face unparalleled challenges in mental health R&D – to accelerate precision psychiatry and deliver valuable new treatments that work for those who need them. The successful candidate will be expected to provide evidence of exceptional potential for research and publication in the relevant fields; of their capacity to interact productively with colleagues from other disciplines and professions; and of their capacity to identify feasible and relevant research projects (solo or collaborative; an extended project spanning the whole research Fellowship, or multiple smaller-scale projects).

Among other duties, the successful applicant will be expected to undertake a limited amount of teaching for the Faculty.

Successful candidates will hold a doctorate in the field of Philosophy, or will at least have submitted a doctoral dissertation for examination by the advertised closing date for this position. (Candidates who have not yet been awarded their doctorate should provide the date their thesis was submitted in their supporting statement.)  They will be expected to provide evidence of an outstanding academic research record, appropriate to their career stage.  Also essential are excellent research skills, and the ability to work independently and without close supervision.
