Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Roman History and Culture within UCD School of Classics.
The School of Classics seeks to appoint a fixed-term (commencing November 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter) Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Roman History and Culture. All areas of research specialisation within the broad field of Roman history and culture will be considered, but applicants with expertise in the early Imperial period are especially welcome.
The School is home to three subjects within the BA degree – Greek and Roman Civilisation, Greek, Latin – and contributes to three BA Humanities degree programmes: Classics, Art History and Archaeology; Classics, English and History; Languages, Linguistics and Cultures. An MA in Classics is offered, along with MLitt and PhD degrees, and we co-deliver the MSc in Mediterranean Archaeology. The UCD Classical Museum holds the largest collection of Classical antiquities on display in Ireland and is embedded in the School’s teaching, research and outreach activities. Access Classics is the School’s award-winning outreach programme. UCD is Ireland’s largest university and is located near to Dublin’s city centre. It is ranked in the top 100 universities in the QS World University ranking, in the global top 50 for sustainability, and is one of Europe’s leading research-intensive universities.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision in Roman history and culture, to produce outstanding research in an area that complements and/or strengthens the School’s current research profile, to participate in outreach activities, and to contribute fully to the day-to-day life of the School of Classics in a collegial and inclusive manner.
