You will work on a project led by Professor Michelle Henning, as part of a team involving 3 postdoctoral researchers and 3 PhD students, plus an administrator, and hosted in the Centre for Culture and Everyday Life (CCEL) in the Department of Communication and Media.

The project researches the new paradigm of photography embedded in contemporary mobile phone cameras and promoted as “AI-assisted” since 2024. It examines the extractive image processing involved in AI image making, asking what ways of seeing the world are being normalised via the integration of generative AI into mobile phone cameras.

The appointee will specialise in critical AI studies and photography/ visual AI. They will help to research the publicity and affordances of current mobile phone cameras, drawing on the latest theoretical and critical work in machine vision and critical AI studies, and using creative and experimental research methods.  Key responsibilities will include planning and conducting a creative practice approach to the study of mobile phone cameras, collecting primary sources for analysis and review, publishing and giving conference papers in the UK, EU and beyond. They will work collaboratively and collegially as part of a dynamic team.

If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
