Brief Job Description

The School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham is one of the UK’s leading centres for Psychology research and education. Home to over 120 academic staff, the School has internationally recognised strengths in mental health, lifespan development, and brain health, and delivers highly rated, BPS-accredited undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

We are seeking to appoint a creative, thoughtful, and collaborative Teaching Fellow (Maternity Cover) to join the School of Psychology. This is an excellent opportunity for an early career academic who is passionate about high quality delivery of Psychology education, and who wants to develop their academic career within a supportive, inclusive, and intellectually vibrant environment.

Person spec

You will contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes in an education-focused role. Working closely with colleagues, you will play a central role in delivering high quality Psychology education. We are particularly seeking a candidate who can teach Developmental Psychology and contribute to the teaching and assessment of research methods and academic skills.

In addition to supporting our taught programmes, you will work closely with members of Birmingham BabyLab. We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Experience with infancy (0-24 months) or early childhood (2-5 years) MEG, EEG, and/or eye tracking,
  • Experience with data analysis pipelines (e.g. MNE Python for M/EEG),
  • Experience with communications (social media, newsletters, websites);
  • Experience with public engagement; ideally, experience with parent-focused public engagement,
  • Experience with team work.

You will undertake a range of education-related activities, including teaching, assessment, and marking, and will play an important role in student academic and pastoral support. You will deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research and pedagogical practice. Management and administration are likely to involve contributions within the School by, for example, taking part in panels and/or working groups. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Fay Julal Cnossen (f.s.julal@bham.ac.uk)
