Our department

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil and environmental engineering departments in the UK. The department was ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian Subject Rankings 2025. We educate over 1,000 students, including over 600 undergraduates in Glasgow, nearly 300 at our partner university at Yunnan, China, 100 taught postgraduates and almost 100 registered research students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and providing an outstanding student experience.

The opportunity

As a Civil Engineering Technician, you will provide practical technical support and advice to a wide range of students and staff and support initially teaching, and in time research and knowledge exchange activities. The post-holder will require a broad understanding of a range of methods and procedures of applications in the civil engineering sector. You will be educated to at least Diploma level in Civil Engineering. We will also consider education in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with relevant technical work experience that can be related to wider civil engineering applications.

The ideal candidate will have significant knowledge and expertise in teaching laboratories in the higher education sector. You will be able to demonstrate practical knowledge of local health and safety regulations and technical standards.

Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical elements to students who are developing skills and will have a varying degree of knowledge and understanding of the subject are critical to the role.

You will have experience of providing a high level of personal responsibility and initiative in response to different technical tasks, and you will have experience of applying judgement to deal with daily challenges and circumstances.

You will have an ability to work autonomously, prioritising and coordinating your own workload and making decisions with minimum supervision to meet individual project deadlines and team deadlines.

A methodical approach to solving complex problems, with limited guidance, will be required, along with knowing when to seek support from your colleagues.
