Role summary

The University of Birmingham is seeking an In vivo Microscopy Specialist Technician to provide specialist scientific and technical support within our Biomedical Imaging Facility (BIF), with a particular focus on the operation, development and delivery of our state-of-the-art 4D in vivo microCT imaging platform.

The BIF forms part of the College of Medicine and Health Technology Hub and supports internal and external users across a broad interdisciplinary research portfolio. The GX3 microCT platform enables high-resolution longitudinal in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro imaging in areas including healthcare technologies, biomaterials, musculoskeletal biology, inflammation and ageing, metabolic disease and computational modelling.

The post holder will provide specialist scientific and technical support to facility users, advising on equipment capabilities, experimental feasibility, study design, imaging workflows, image acquisition, data management and analysis. They will deliver user training, assess competency, support troubleshooting, optimise imaging protocols and contribute to the safe, effective and sustainable use of the platform.

The role will also support wider BIF operations across our microscopy facility, including user access, scheduling, equipment maintenance, calibration, service coordination, data transfer, backups, archiving and documentation. The post holder will contribute to user engagement activities such as demonstrations, workshops and training events, and will work collaboratively with colleagues across related facilities to support service improvement.

Person Specification

Applicants should be educated to degree level, or hold an equivalent technical qualification, or have substantial relevant technical experience in a similar role.

The successful candidate will have experience working with in vivo research models, including animal handling and support for regulated experimental procedures in a research environment. They will also have experience using advanced imaging technologies within a research, technical or shared facility setting.

Applicants should be able to provide specialist technical advice, understand user requirements and support the development of appropriate imaging and experimental workflows. They should have strong organisational skills, the ability to manage their own workload, and the confidence to work independently while contributing effectively to a team.

Good communication skills are essential, as the role involves working with users at all levels. Applicants should also be able to diagnose and resolve technical problems, support experimental optimisation and use relevant image processing, image analysis and data management software.

Knowledge of relevant Home Office, governance, health and safety, equality, diversity and inclusion requirements is essential.
