About the role
The University of Leicester is seeking an exceptional leader to join the Technical and Research Infrastructure Services Directorate (TRIS) as Deputy Director and Research Platform Commercial Operations Manager. This is a pivotal senior role with responsibility for the strategic and operational leadership of the University’s specialist research platforms and technical infrastructure services. Working closely with academic and professional service colleagues, you will shape infrastructure strategy, lead the development and continuous improvement of research platform services, and ensure they remain aligned with the University’s research ambitions and regulatory requirements. You will also contribute to the senior leadership of TRIS and deputise for the Director when required.
A key focus of the role is to maximise the impact and sustainability of the University’s research platforms through commercial growth, cost recovery and external engagement. You will develop partnerships with industry, research organisations and other stakeholders, promoting the University’s technical capabilities nationally and internationally to generate new income opportunities. Leading a diverse portfolio of services and technical specialists, you will drive operational excellence, standardise practices, oversee significant budgets and infrastructure projects, and ensure researchers and external customers benefit from high-quality, innovative support. As part of a University recognised for its world-changing research and education, you will contribute to a culture that is inclusive, inspiring and impactful, helping to advance the ambitions of our Citizens of Change community.
About you
You will hold a degree and typically a postgraduate or professional qualification in a relevant technical, scientific or research infrastructure discipline, or possess substantial equivalent experience. You will bring a successful track record of leading large technical teams and complex service operations, together with demonstrable experience of commercial income generation, service development and stakeholder engagement. Your understanding of research infrastructure, quality assurance and compliance within a university or research-intensive environment will enable you to provide both strategic direction and operational leadership. Experience of working with NHS or other public sector research partners, mentoring staff, or managing major projects would be advantageous.
We are looking for an individual with strong commercial awareness, excellent leadership and communication skills, and the ability to influence and collaborate across organisational boundaries. You will be an analytical and strategic thinker who can identify opportunities, solve complex problems and deliver meaningful improvements. Most importantly, you will share the University’s commitment to creating an environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed, academic freedom and freedom of speech within the law are respected, and people are empowered to achieve their ambitions and make a positive difference through research, innovation and collaboration.
