Online Dissertation Supervisor - MA Artificial Intelligence

CEG Digital wishes to engage the services of a self-employed contractor as an Online Dissertation Supervisor for an MA in Artificial Intelligence (conversion programme), running in partnership with the University of Southampton.

We are looking for candidates with experience of supervising and marking in higher education at postgraduate level, with a completed PhD qualification in a relevant field.  As the MA in Artificial Intelligence includes technical, organisational, ethical and societal dimensions of AI, expertise does not need to come exclusively from data/computer science or AI backgrounds.  A suitable supervisor could also have specialist knowledge in business management, digital transformation, sociology, criminology and law (as a few examples) and how AI is applied responsibly across diverse sectors and professional contexts. Key to the supervisor role is experience in research methods and ethics to appropriately steer students to the successful completion of their dissertation and master’s programme.  

Role Description

The Online Dissertation Supervisor plays a pivotal role in supporting students through the final stage of their online postgraduate journey – their dissertation module worth 45-credits.

Students are entitled to five hours of supervision contact time, spanning a period of approximately five months. During this time, the supervisor will mark the proposal submission worth 15-credits (after completion of a research methods module delivered by a tutor) and meet online with students at regular intervals to provide academic guidance and constructive feedback. It is also expected that supervisors will ensure students maintain a supervision log of their progress.

Additionally, the supervisor will first mark their supervisee’s final dissertation submission and for each supervisee they have, they will second mark the work of another student. Induction, supervision, preparation and marking are all included in the fixed fee for services paid per student supervised.

This is a flexible, part-time opportunity; however, supervisors will be expected to meet key deadlines and participate in mandatory activities linked to the university’s academic calendar and assessment schedule. Full details will be provided before the commencement of each module.

The Programme and Dissertation Module

This MA conversion programme has been designed for professionals in any sector, including healthcare, agriculture, banking, or beyond.  Students may not have any prior AI qualifications or experience before enrolling on the programme.  Studying machine learning and statistical learning as well as AI’s societal impact, this course will provide a comprehensive foundation to help students learn to use AI responsibly and effectively through one of three pathway options: MA Artificial Intelligence, MA Artificial Intelligence (Criminal Justice Systems), and MA Artificial Intelligence (Digital Transformation).

Supervisors will support students in designing and conducting independent research within the field of human-centred AI, utilising appropriate research methods and grounded within an understating of the process of research management and ethical and legal issues associated with the conduct of social research.

Interviews are expected to take place during the week of 28 September.
