Background

The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR) at Alliance Manchester Business School is one of the world's leading centres for research on science, technology and innovation policy. The Institute brings together researchers working across five interconnected themes: Innovation Management and Strategy; Science, Technology and Policy and Knowledge Production; Emerging Technologies; Socio-Technical Systems and Networks; and Geography, Place and Innovation.

MIoIR has a strong international reputation for both fundamental and applied research, with close engagement with policy communities at regional, national and European levels. The Institute is an active partner in the European network EU-SPRI, and maintains extensive collaborative links with leading innovation research centres worldwide. We host a vibrant doctoral training programme in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP), currently comprising around 28 PhD students across all cohorts. The Institute and Division also contribute to the wider doctoral community within Alliance Manchester Business School, including Business and Management PhD students working in innovation-related areas such as strategic management and entrepreneurship. We are seeking to appoint a Professor on a fractional (0.2 FTE) basis to support and sustain the quality and distinctiveness of our research programme, and in particular to contribute to the continued development of MIoIR's early career research community.

Overall Purpose of the Job:

The postholder will play a central role in supporting MIoIR's doctoral training programme and contributing to the Institute's research activities and culture and, where appropriate, contributing to the development of Business and Management PhD students within AMBS whose research aligns with the Division’s broader fields of expertise. The postholder will be required to spend periods of time in Manchester to support doctoral review, training and other research activities. This is anticipated to amount to approximately three weeks per year, although the exact level and timing of attendance will be agreed on an ongoing basis in light of the role’s responsibilities and operational requirements.

Main Responsibilities: Chair/ Professor

• Review doctoral students’ progress as part of the annual review process, providing substantive, formative feedback on research progress, conceptual development, and doctoral trajectories
• Attend and contribute to the annual PhD conference and doctoral induction activities
• Contribute to doctoral training, including the development or delivery of elements of the PhD methods and research training curriculum, in collaboration with MIoIR and wider AMBS programme staff where appropriate
• Actively engage with the research activities and culture of MIoIR, including participation in Institute seminars, working groups, and strategic discussions
• Support the international visibility and collaborative standing of the Institute, including co-authorship and research collaboration with Institute members where appropriate
• Contribute to the mentoring and professional development of early career researchers within the Institute
