Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to develop algorithms for solving Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs) on quantum computing hardware within the quantum computing team led by Professor Jonathan Pritchard at the University of Strathclyde. Working closely with an industrial partner with expertise in quantum algorithms and chemistry, the successful candidate will help design and benchmark novel approaches to solving CRNs, with a focus on annealing-based quantum optimisation methods.
The project will initially investigate graph-based algorithms for neutral atom quantum computers, chosen for their scalability and long qubit coherence times relative to annealing timescales. There will also be scope to explore other hardware platforms, including superconducting qubit annealers. The research will focus on developing suitable mappings of simplified CRN problems for encoding onto quantum hardware and assessing performance through numerical simulation of both direct quantum annealing and hybrid quantum-classical approaches.
As a Research Fellow, you will undertake independent and collaborative research, establish a distinctive research profile, and disseminate results through publications and conference presentations. You will contribute to research funding applications, support the supervision of students and staff, and engage in external networks and collaborations to enhance research impact and identify future funding opportunities. You will also contribute to knowledge exchange activities, collaborate with colleagues where appropriate to support teaching, and participate in departmental, faculty, and university activities.
To be considered, you will hold a PhD, or equivalent experience, in a relevant field such as quantum algorithms or quantum simulation. You will have a strong research record demonstrated through high-quality publications, experience contributing to research proposals or funding applications, and the ability to plan and deliver research programmes successfully. You will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
This post is funded through an externally funded research programme. Due to the nature of the funding and associated eligibility requirements, applications will only be considered from UK nationals who meet the essential criteria for the role. The position is based within the Department of Physics, internationally recognised for research excellence, industrial engagement, and high-quality teaching. The department has world-leading expertise in quantum technologies, including quantum computing, sensing, timing, and simulation. The successful candidate will join the Neutral Atom Quantum Computing team within the Ultracold Matter and Quantum Technologies Group. Alongside delivering the project, there will be opportunities to work within a vibrant research environment spanning multiple quantum computing approaches, including optimisation and error correction, supporting professional development throughout the appointment.
