Aquarium Technician (Zebrafish)
Are you passionate about animal welfare and looking to apply your technical skills in a vital biomedical research setting? We have an exciting opportunity in the Biological Services Aquarium (BSA) for a dedicated Aquarium Technician to join our team, maintaining our zebrafish colony and ensuring our aquatic systems operate to top biological standards.

Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a reliable, disciplined, and proactive individual to join our close-knit team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on, physically active environment and takes pride in delivering high standards of hygiene and technical accuracy to meet strict Home Office welfare requirements.

While prior experience in animal care or aquatic systems is desirable, it is not essential—we welcome applicants with transferable skills and a strong work ethic, as full training will be provided. You must be comfortable with heavy lifting, manual cleaning, and following strict protocols. This part-time role (15 hours weekly) is a great opportunity to balance your career with other commitments, and may also suit current students or early-career individuals looking to gain valuable technical experience in a world-class facility.

About the Department & The Role
The Biological Services Aquarium (BSA) is a critical facility supporting groundbreaking biomedical research at Sheffield. You will join a supportive, highly skilled technical team of seven professionals who work collaboratively to maintain our high standards of animal care.

In this varied and essential role, you will help keep our facility running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. Working alongside our team, this role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your technical skills in aquatic husbandry, chemical preparation, and compliance within a regulated research setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform careful manual cleaning and upkeep for over 3,000 tanks, fish racks, and shared facility zones.
  • Monitor zebrafish health daily, recording operational data accurately and reporting potential welfare concerns.
  • Prepare chemical stock solutions to detailed, precise specifications.
  • Adhere strictly to Home Office compliance guidelines and high animal welfare standards.

Working Pattern

  • Hours: 15 hours per week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays). Wednesday shifts include team meetings.
  • Weekend Rotation: Paid weekend shifts on a 1-in-4 rotation schedule.

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
