The University of St Andrews Business School seeks to appoint an outstanding academic leader to serve as Head of the Department of Management for an initial term of five years, while holding a permanent appointment as Professor of Management.

We are looking for a scholar of international distinction with an established reputation for excellence in research and a proven track record of securing significant external research funding. The successful candidate will have led high-quality, externally funded research projects and will demonstrate a programme of ambitious and impactful future research.

They will bring a strong functional grounding in Management, strengthen the Department’s engagement with mainstream debates and leading international journals, and promote excellent research and impact.

You will play a prominent role in representing the University of St Andrews and the Business School within UK and international academic and professional communities. You will also engage with business leaders and contribute to the development and delivery of executive education and other forms of external engagement.

You will provide ambitious strategic leadership to the Department of Management, with considerable scope to shape its next phase of development and future academic direction. You will foster a supportive and high-performing environment for research, education, and academic collaboration, strengthen engagement with mainstream debates and leading journals, and ensure that the Department's work speaks to the day-to-day challenges facing practitioners as well as major global challenges. From 2028, the Business School will join the School of International Relations in New College, creating an interdisciplinary ecosystem for research and education focused on global and local challenges. The role provides an excellent opportunity to help shape and drive this innovative partnership, while building wider collaborations with disciplines across the University. A central priority will be to realign and develop the Department’s research expertise in support of the core objectives and strategic priorities of the newly formed Business School, ensuring that the Department’s future direction is closely aligned with the School’s strategy.

Candidates must hold a doctorate in a relevant discipline and demonstrate the ability to deliver excellent teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to students from a diverse range of backgrounds.

The selection interview is scheduled to take place on Friday, 6 November 2026.

• Evidence of leadership in delivering high-quality research projects and academic initiatives;
• A clear and compelling vision for future research activity;
• A commitment to excellence in teaching, mentorship, and academic leadership.
• A compelling vision for the strategic development of the Department and a proven ability to provide inclusive and ambitious academic leadership.
• A clear strategy for realigning and developing the Department’s research expertise in support of the Business School’s core objectives and strategic priorities.
