About the Role
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Missing Elements report (2022) has identified a ‘leaky pipeline’ in the recruitment, retention and progression of students from ethnic minority groups in the chemical sciences, especially on to PhD studies and positions of seniority.
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), in a consortium with Imperial College London and the University of Greenwich University (UoG), have been awarded funding under the RSC Missing Element Grant Scheme (MEGS) to address this by making the chemical sciences UG curricula more inclusive through highlighting minorities in chemistry that we hope will inspire students, especially those from an ethnic minority background, to aim higher.
We have co-created, with UG and PG students across the three institutions >100 profiles, including posters and PowerPoint slides of scientists from currently under-represented groups (URGs), and these are being embedded into the UG curricula at the three institutions.
We are now in the third and final year of the project and are looking for a talented and creative person to work with us, initially until 30 Nov 2026 (part-time, 7 h / week), to be the resource coordinator in overseeing and supervising the work of students but also to be involved in resource creation and design and to provide parameters to ensure the quality of the resources created. This role requires the person to coordinate with academic staff leading the project and attend meetings of the MEGS planning committee. The contract is expected to be extended subject to further funding approval.
About You
You will have an Undergraduate or Postgraduate qualification in Chemical Sciences and be able to devote 7 hours per week to this work. The working hours are flexible. Students from the UK ethnic minority community are especially encouraged to apply. PhD level studies in the field would be an advantage.
You should have a good knowledge of curriculum topics in general chemistry and be able to engage in research to identify past and current chemists currently overlooked. We are looking for an individual who will enable creative design of resources and act as an inspirational role model for chemistry students.
