Research Assistant or Associate in Contrail Modelling

Imperial College London - Department of Aeronautics

Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £45,399 to £59,484 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 11th September 2026
Closes: 4th October 2026
Job Ref: ENG04014

About the role:

Aviation has been identified as one of the hardest-to-decarbonise sectors, with growing environmental impacts. This role is dedicated to understanding and addressing those impacts, using a combination of computational modelling and observational analysis.

What you would be doing:

As part of the Aerospace Environmental Impacts Simulation (AEIS) group, you will develop and apply computational models of aviation’s global environmental impacts including on the climate and regional air quality. 50% of your role will be dedicated to ZENITIA, an EU-funded project where you will use models such as GEOS-Chem and CoCiP to quantify the environmental impacts of current and next-generation aircraft. The other 50% of your role will be dedicated to flexible research under the Contrail Research Centre (CRC) at Imperial, in which you will have the freedom to identify and address the most critical research questions in contrail science. Across both areas you will be encouraged to develop and apply novel computational techniques, and to identify new opportunities to incorporate observational constraints.

What we are looking for:

  • A highly quantitative mindset with a deep interest in computational methods
  • Enthusiasm to reduce the environmental impact of the aerospace sector
  • Interest in research leadership, including strong communication skills
  • Prior experience applying, and ideally developing, chemistry-transport, chemistry-climate, and/or contrail models is highly desirable but not essential

What we can offer you:

  • Integration with three different research groups across Imperial (AEIS, CRC, and the Brahmal Institute for Sustainable Aviation)
  • A highly flexible role in which you will have the opportunity to collaboratively identify and define your research objectives
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: Gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
