Description

The Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Technology Ethics and Global Security, to begin in Fall 2027. This position will be affiliated with the McKenna Center for Human Development and Global Business, one of the Keough School's constituent institutes and centers. The successful candidate will also be appointed as an affiliated faculty member of Notre Dame's Institute for Ethics and the Common Good, which convenes a multidisciplinary community to advance moral understanding and develop compelling responses to the most pressing ethical issues of our era.

We seek candidates focusing on the ethical issues related to technology and conflict. Duties include research, teaching and service. We seek a scholar whose research examines the intersection of emerging technology and national security — including but not limited to nuclear weapons, artificial intelligence, autonomous and drone systems, biotechnology and bioweapons, and cybersecurity — through a lens that is both policy relevant and ethically grounded. The successful candidate will produce scholarship that speaks to policymakers, military and intelligence practitioners, and the broader public, while rigorously examining how these technologies bear on human welfare, human dignity, and the norms that govern the use of force.

Qualifications

Competitive candidates for this professorship will have a scholarly track record with evidence of, or potential for, high-quality research and, ideally, policy engagement in global and national discussions on ethical issues related to the use of technology in warfare and conflict. A PhD from any discipline is acceptable with a preference for business, computer science, economics, philosophy, political science, public policy, science and technology studies, or sociology. Regardless of discipline the candidate's research should include deep expertise on the intersection between ethics and technology. ABD candidates will be considered for an entry level position.

The University of Notre Dame seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to our Catholic tradition, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning. The Keough School is committed to fostering a culture of diverse views and approaches to Global Affairs. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or service has prepared them to contribute to our mission and commitment to diversity and excellence. All applicants whose scholarly pursuits will enhance our ability to fulfill that commitment are encouraged to apply.
