About us

The MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) is a biomedical research institute where scientists and clinicians collaborate to advance the understanding of biology and its application to medicine. The LMS is home to more than 400 research staff and postgraduate students and is based at Hammersmith Hospital, with close links to Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. LMS IT operates its own dedicated HPC environment, which is extensively used by multidisciplinary research groups and Institute facilities. The LMS IT department currently manages a SLURM-based cluster comprising CPU, high-memory (HMEM), and GPU nodes, supporting a diverse range of computational research.

About the role

As the Institute’s computational requirements continue to grow, the postholder will take a proactive role in designing, managing, and developing the next generation of LMS HPC infrastructure. This will include identifying opportunities to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and accessibility, as well as exploring interactive computing solutions that can enable a broader range of researchers to make effective use of HPC resources.

The successful candidate will bring substantial knowledge and practical experience across a broad range of HPC and systems technologies, including Linux system administration, software installation and lifecycle management, job scheduling and configuration management, cluster automation, performance monitoring and optimisation, and working with LMS IT colleagues for general hardware maintenance.

About You

We are seeking an experience and motivated Senior Research HPC Engineer to join the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) and play a key role in expanding the Institute’s scientific computing capabilities. This is an exciting opportunity for an HPC professional who wants to combine hands-on engineering with direct scientific impact, supporting cutting-edge research in computational biology.

This role is particularly well suited to someone who enjoys hands-on systems engineering, working with and developing scientific and computational workflows, exploring emerging technologies, collaborating closely with scientists, researchers and other engineers. The successful candidate will be expected to understand research needs and translate them into robust, practical, and sustainable technological solutions that enable biomedical scientific discovery.

What we offer

As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer defined benefit pension scheme and excellent holiday entitlement (30 days plus 2.5 privilege days & 8 bank holidays), family friendly policies (6 months full pay maternity & adoption leave), a range of shopping/travel discounts, access to our Employee Assistant Programme Scheme, Health and Wellbeing Support and a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme.
