Healey Family Fellow in Irish Writing, Global Irish Studies Initiative

The Global Irish Studies Initiative in Georgetown University’s College of Arts and Sciences seeks applications for the Healey Family Fellowship in Irish Writing for the Spring 2027 (January to May, 2027) semester. The Fellowship, established in 2026, invites a writer in any genre (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, drama, etc.), who is based on the island of Ireland or whose work deals substantially with Ireland, to spend a semester at Georgetown University. 

The Fellow will teach one class in literary studies or creative writing practice, and will be based in the Department of English. In addition, the Fellow will offer at least one public event in the course of their tenure, and will be expected to engage with colleagues and students from the Global Irish Studies Initiative, the Department of English, and the wider university. 

Georgetown University has a long history of teaching contemporary Irish literature and supporting Irish writers through the Global Irish Studies Initiative, the Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice, and the Department of English. The Healey Fellowship extends this tradition of hospitality toward Irish writing in all its forms in the university. 

The Global Irish Studies Initiative is committed to research and teaching that reflects the richness and diversity of modern Ireland. As such, we welcome applicants whose life or work exhibits a wide understanding of both Irishness and Irish writing. 

Timing of the Appointment: 

We intend to appoint one Fellow for the Spring (January to May) 2027 semester. 

However, we also welcome applications from those interested in joining us for the Fall 2027, Spring 2028, Fall 2028, or Spring 2029 semesters. We intend to appoint one Fellow in each academic year. Availability of the position from Fall 2027 to Spring 2029 is contingent on funding, and will be at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Required Qualifications: 

• A demonstrated publication history is required. Candidates must show evidence of active and ongoing creative practice and a strong record of publication.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and working with students from diverse backgrounds. 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience teaching in a university-level literature or creative writing program.
• A record of public engagement through readings, workshops, or other public-facing events. 

Remuneration 

The projected base salary range is $42,750.46 - $50,389.40 for the fellowship period (January to May, 2027). Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
