Research Fellow (Fixed Term)

We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in the generation and analysis of quantitative education data to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education; a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Observatory is generating state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematical education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society.  Its remit stretches through primary and secondary maths education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in the mathematical sciences. 

The Observatory is exploring how learner pathways and outcomes are impacted by a range of societal, personal, and educational factors, through the generation and analysis of a groundbreaking primary dataset comprising multiple linked surveys as part of the Observatory’s longitudinal cohort studies, and through the analysis of administrative datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database).  It is also undertaking additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.

You will be able to carry out research of a high standard utilising a variety of data sets. It will be key that you prepare your work for publication in leading journals and contribute to its distribution at national and international meetings, as well as contributing to Observatory reports designed to be accessible to policy makers and other stakeholders.

This position is available from 1 November 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter). Hours of work are full time, though applications of 21.75 hours per week and above will be considered. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with you, though secure data will need to be accessed via the Observatory’s Data Lab on Jubilee Campus, University of Nottingham.

This position is available on a fixed term contract until 17 October 2028. Further funding is expected to extend this role and others to October 2033.
