The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Geneva, Switzerland invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position at the rank of
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of INTERNATIONAL HISTORY AND POLITICS
starting 1 September 2027 or on a mutually agreed-upon date.
The Geneva Graduate Institute is recruiting an Assistant Professor in International History and Politics (IHP). Applicants may hold a Ph.D. from a history department or from an area studies department that trains historians. The applicants must have a strong research and teaching profile and show clear promise of making a significant contribution to their scholarly field. A public intellectual profile is a plus but not a must.
We are looking for applicants with a broad vision and wide research interests whose work focuses on the history of geopolitics and/or foreign policy and/or international security.
The period of the Cold War is one possible focus, though we are open to other modern and/or contemporary periods too.
Geographically, we welcome applicants working on any region of the world; and we have a special interest in scholars working on the United States and/or the People’s Republic of China.
The Geneva Graduate Institute has an interdisciplinary MA programme (MINT) and awards MAs and PhDs in five departments: IHP, International Economics, International Relations & Political Science, Anthropology & Sociology, International Law.
The successful applicant will supervise MINT MA theses and department MA theses and PhD dissertations, and teach four postgraduate seminars per academic year, normally two in IHP and two for MINT. (Student enrolment in MINT and department classes overlaps.)
The Graduate Institute favours a transdisciplinary culture and welcomes candidates who are open to discussions across disciplinary boundaries. Institute professors often work across disciplinary lines, alongside colleagues in other departments, not the least in thesis and dissertation advising.
The Institute’s teaching language is English or French. Prior knowledge of French is not required. However, the successful candidate is expected to acquire an at least passive knowledge within two years of being hired.
The Institute is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, marital status, disability status, race, national origin, colour, gender, sexual orientation or religion.
Application:
Note: Longlisted candidates will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation and other documents on relatively short notice.
