Lecturer in Engineering Materials

About the role:

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Engineering Materials to enhance and strengthen our research and teaching capacities in the areas of metals, alloys, nanomaterials, polymers, elastomers, ceramics and composites for the applications in mechanical engineering, marine engineering, naval architecture, and composites engineering.

You will :

• be encouraged throughout teaching, research and recruitment activities to maximise the benefits gained from the university’s wide range of test facilities. These include our Materials Analysis, Characterisation and Testing Laboratory, Nanomaterials and Devices Laboratory, Composites Engineering Laboratory, Energy and Sustainability Laboratory and the Digital Fabrication Laboratory.
• take responsibility for leading and managing these activities, while reporting to members of the school leadership team and working with staff from across the university.
• take an active approach to interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary teaching and research collaborations and will be able to demonstrate external collaborations with the potential for generating impact.
• work to design and deliver innovative teaching on these topics that prepares and inspires undergraduate and postgraduate students to pursue careers in the engineering sectors. This should reflect the focus on experiential learning at the University of Plymouth, and be informed by your research in these topics, collaborating with academics (both internally and externally) and industry to achieve real impact on the engineering sector.
• be asked to design and engaging in student recruitment activities, demonstrating enthusiasm and passion for your subject area.

Due to the nature of the role, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate working from home.

The successful candidate may be required to obtain an ATAS Certificate prior to this research being undertaken.

What we’re looking for:

You should:

• hold a PhD in materials science or materials engineering or a closely related discipline.
• have demonstrable enthusiasm for developing and delivering experiential and inspirational teaching that is informed by research  or industrial experience in materials science and engineering.
• either have a track record of engaging with industry partners to develop and deliver innovative research that has meaningful impact on the engineering sectors or be able to demonstrate the aptitude to build this engagement.
• have a track record of attracting funding to support research or be able to present a plan on how you will do this.
