Specialist Technician: Letterpress

Central Saint Martins is internationally recognised for its creative education, industry connections and commitment to innovation across art, design and communication. We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist Technician: Letterpress to join our Print Technical Resources team and support one of the College's unique and valued specialist workshop environments.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of traditional craft, contemporary practice and creative experimentation. You will take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Letterpress workshop, supporting students, staff and projects across a wide range of disciplines. Through technical instruction, workshop inductions, demonstrations and one-to-one guidance, you will help students develop their technical confidence and realise ambitious creative outcomes. 

As a specialist practitioner, you will share your expertise in letterpress printing, print finishing and publication production, supporting learning, teaching, research and exhibition activities. You will play a key role in maintaining and developing the workshop's specialist equipment, type collections and resources, ensuring they remain safe, accessible and relevant to contemporary creative practice. 

The role offers the opportunity to collaborate with academics, technicians, artists, designers and industry professionals within one of the world's leading creative institutions. You will also contribute to the ongoing development of workshop practices, helping to explore sustainable approaches to print production and resource management while supporting excellent student experiences.

Your profile

You will bring substantial practical experience and specialist knowledge of letterpress printing and graphic communication gained through professional practice, technical support or creative production environments. 

You will have a strong understanding of letterpress processes and be confident supporting users through all stages of production, including type setting, proofing, locking up, printing, finishing and the organisation and distribution of type. 

We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience supporting teaching and learning within a higher education, further education or creative workshop environment. Knowledge of sustainable print practices, responsible material selection, waste reduction, resource efficiency and environmentally responsible workshop processes would also be beneficial and aligns with Central Saint Martins' commitment to climate justice and sustainable creative practice.
